Choosing Skin Tone and Effects
In my opinion, skin tone and details are the absolute most important thing for your doll. You can choose everything about what this baby will look like. You can have veins, that are painted to look like blue tubes flowing under the skin. Capillaries, the red broken up strands on your eyelids, are some of the details that really sell the realism. Or on a completely different note there is mottling, the red and white blotches that are made usually with a cosmetic wedge. Personally, mottling is my favorite; I add several layers of purples, blues, reds, and pinks. There are also those scratches almost every baby has from their sharp little fingernails that can be created with some red paint and purple shadowing.
On the more important side of skin detailing is the skin tone. Do you want your baby Caucasian or African American, fair or olive skinned,? The result will all depend on the color and number of layers you put on the vinyl. I have now done many Caucasian dolls, an Asian doll and an African American doll. I love all the different subtleties you can do with changes to skin tone!
